Sunday Funday, actually Sunday FanDay! The public is invited to watch practice this afternoon from 3-5 pm on the North Field. Our players and coaches will be available to meet the public and play catch with kids. We’re expecting a nice turn-out at the North Field today, and I look forward to seeing my wife and kids for a awhile after practice.
Day 2 was very productive, we ran spit practices again and got a lot installed and many high-quality reps. Moved a few guys up and down from the practice they were at the first day, not depth chart moves, rather it was a simple matter of getting reps. Day 2 produced a fierce day of singing competition. Jordan Donnelly, a FR Long Snapper from Palm Desert stole the afternoon with a heart-felt rendition of Bon Jovi’s 1986 hit Living on a Prayer at lunch that inspired the entire team to bust into the chorus, quite impressively considering when they were born. However, in the evening team meeting, mild-mannered FR Offensive Tackle Jared Smith from La Habra High School flipped a switch and busted-out Richie Valens’ classic La Bamba in what seemed to be near-perfect Spanish. The place went bananas! Smith is the clubhouse leader right now until someone else steps-up.
The 10 o’clock bells have just sounded at William Rolland Stadium’s clock tower. 30 minutes before the annual Dodgeball Tournament. The team is split into 8 teams for various team-building competitions and we’re coming-out swinging by making Dodgeball the first event. At the conclusion of the event, the champions of the tourney square-off against the coaches. For the past two years, the coaching staff has been able to capture the crown, and we also won in my first year as Head Coach in 2007, giving our staff three wins in six seasons. As I mentioned earlier, there is a youth movement on staff and it appears that we may have a puncher’s chance in 2013. I’ll report back before the FanDay practice with details. Pray for me…
