- I really liked the split practice format. We liked it so much, we decided to do it again on Day 2. The reps that the young players received were invaluable;
- Great energy from our new coaches. They did a nice job of teaching, and their passion for football is refreshing;
- The kids really bought into the Defensive theme of Swarm and Strip, there were guys flying all over the place trying to rip the ball out (thanks Coach Marinelli).
It was only one practice per player, and we were only in helmets, so I will reserve judgement on evaluating players until we have more film. New players whose names kept coming-up in film and staff meetings were:
Jared Smith (OT), Skyler Stone (LB), Wayne Chapman (RB), Bryce Henderson (LB), John Perkins (DL), DeJon Rothschild (DL), Kody Duffy (LB/DL), Justin Gilbert (OG), Thomas Asaije (WR), Jake Scott (WR), and Logan Sanders (DB).
There were quite a few others, but it’s early in the AM and I’m only starting my second cup of coffee. A couple of impact players are awaiting medical clearances and will be joining the fray on Monday, which will really liven things up in several position battles.
Coach Sheppard (MVP of the 1971 National Championship game and veteran NFL coach) will be working with our Wide Receivers in the morning session. He and NAIA Hall of Fame Coach Shoup addressed the team last night during our meeting about the history and tradition of CLC/CLU Football. The stories of past glories and knuckleheads really came to life, and it was an awesome experience to hear Coach Shoup convey the story of the Blue Slippers in-person to the team. It was a special night to be Kingsmen!
